Are Potatoes Paleo?

Posted On: March 7, 2017
Whether you are already following a Paleo way of life, or it is something you have been thinking about taking up, you may have wondered whether potatoes are forbidden or permitted when following this type of diet.
For most of us, potatoes have been a staple part of our diet since we were very young. Whether they are chipped, baked or mashed, potatoes are one of the most versatile of all vegetables and are pretty hard to give up or avoid, especially if you love to eat out. The good news is that the Paleo Foundation, one of the world’s biggest and most trusted authorities on the Paleo Diet, has recently declared the white potato to be Paleo-friendly. You can read more in the Paleo Consensus Report, but for those excited about the news or short on time, we have summarized the good news for you in this article.

A Ticking Carb Bomb?

According to the Paleo Consensus Report, one of the biggest misconceptions about potatoes is that they are a “carb bomb” and hold very little in the way of nutritional value. However, the latest nutritional data contests this. While it may be true that potatoes are rich in carbohydrates, they are also bursting with vitamins C and B6, magnesium, potassium, copper and folate. This makes them a very valuable and nutritious food to have around when you are following a Paleo diet. They also contain up to 9 percent protein.

The Rise and Fall of the Potato vs. Paleo Argument

When the Paleo Diet first became popular, white potatoes were a big no-no. This was because they were cited as being high on the glycemic index and because they were part of the nightshade family. There was also the argument that potatoes were not around during Paleolithic times.
However, as time went on, more and more Paleo experts started to realize the nutritional value of potatoes and how they could form a big part of the Paleo way of life without being detrimental to health. But don’t take just our word for it. In a study carried out by the Paleo Foundation, 77 percent of Paleo followers recognized potatoes as a Paleo food, while 23 percent thought the opposite.

The Potato Health Profile and the Big Processed Problem

While potatoes may now be recognized as part of the Paleo Diet, it is important that you incorporate them in the most healthy way possible. There are many potato products on the market today that are heavily processed and that contain vast amounts of fat, salt and sugars. These changes in the health profile of a pure and natural potato can increase the risk of obesity and diabetes. This means it is more important than ever to eat potatoes in the most natural and organic way possible.
