The Classic Burger

Posted On: January 27, 2015

The weekend of the big game is upon us! If you’re hosting friends or helping with last minute party planning, we’ve got one word for you: BURGERS. We understand that food can be a tricky topic when faced with feeding a large group of folks and nothing can be tastier than a good ol’ fashioned burger spread! With the right organization, burgers can be one of the most cost effective and crowd pleasing menu items out there. Simply cook up those grass-fed patties and set out a mini-buffet of toppings, it’s time for some football!

Whether it’s a quick dinner for the family or the main dish for your tail gating party, burgers make it easier to quickly adapt to your guests’ nutritional needs. Your sister has Celiac? Wrap that grass-fed burger with lettuce instead of a bun. Your aunt despises pickles but wants something crunchy? Try iceberg lettuce or a crispy cole slaw. Vegetarians? Keep some leafy greens on hand so you can make a huge, fortifying salad with an assortment of toppings.

Toppings, toppings and more toppings (and then more toppings)

The usual suspects should be included, if only for the burger purists out there. Ketchup, mustard, Paleo mayo, lettuce, tomatoes and onions can keep just about anyone happy. Once you have the basics covered, branch out a bit and get a little creative. Cover your taste bases: crunchy toppings (bacon, cole slaw, homemade sweet potato chips), creamy toppings (cheese, mayo) and softer toppings (like tomato or caramelized onions). Have some chili in the freezer? Spoon some onto your burger with some sharp cheddar cheese and you have yourself an entirely new flavor index to enjoy. The perfect burger is an ever evolving dream – and it’s up to us to try every single possible combination out there!

Good Beef

You can top your burger with the most decadent, sought after, rare and expensive ingredients, but if the quality of the beef doesn’t match, you may run into some taste trouble. Grass fed beef is packed with heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids, more antioxidants and lets just be honest – it tastes dramatically better. If you’ve ever had any doubts about grass-fed beef, we strongly urge you to look here and here.

Grass Fed Burger Recipe

  • Grass fed Beef Patties (or ground beef)
  • Toppings of your choice
    • We recommend splitting it up into the following groups so that there’s something for everyone:
      • pungent: raw onions, garlic, pepper jack cheese, jalapeños, mustard
      • crunchy: raw veggies, iceberg lettuce, cole slaw, home made sweet potato chips
      • creamy: avocado, cheese, paleo mayo
      • sweet: barbecue sauce, ketchup
  • Preheat grill or cast iron skillet to Medium-low or 325 degrees
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste
  • Place burger on grill, wait until juice rises to the top and flip (the internal temperature should be 160 when finished)
  • Let rest
  • While the burgers are resting, pop your bun on the grill or skillet and toast it up! You can replace the traditional bun with an English muffin, pita bread or a sturdy piece of lettuce.
  • Pile as many ingredients as you like onto your burger!
