The Ketogenic Diet Explained

(yes!) Do we use GMOs (No!) Where do we source our chickens? (here!) The list of questions goes on and on. We’ve recently been asked by multiple Beetniks about the Ketogenic Diet. The Ketogenic diet relies heavily on healthy fats and clean, nutrient dense foods, so naturally our fish and beef fit the bill! 

What is the Ketogenic Diet?

The Ketogenic Diet, or Keto Diet, has grown and evolved to rely on low carbohydrates and high fats. In response to reducing or eliminating carbs, the body begins to turn fats into fatty acids and ketones. As a result, the brain sources ketones for energy instead of glucose.

What should I eat on it?

People on this diet prioritize a high fat intake, so foods like heavy cream, butter, and oils (like coconut and olive) are encouraged. Employing natural fats can be very healthy, if one focuses on saturated and monounsaturated fats, rather than the heart-clogging trans fats. That means salmon, avocado, ghee (a form of butter), and egg yolks. There should also be a good amount of protein in this diet, including animal meats, fish, tofu, eggs, cheese, and other dairy. Nuts fit perfectly into this diet, as they are high in both protein and fat. As always, you can never go wrong with vegetables.

What should I avoid?

Empty carbs, such as pasta, bread, and rice, don’t belong in this diet. One of the biggest no-nos here is sugar, which is a simple carbohydrate. That means no candy, honey, or processed foods. Many people testing out the ketogenic lifestyle will choose to go gluten-free as a means of removing wheat from their lives, thus making it easier to limit carbs. As a general rule, indulge in heavy creams and butter, not sweets or grains.

Is the Ketogenic Diet right for me?

While the Ketogenic Diet  has also become popular with athletes, unfortunately, this isn’t a diet you can go into halfheartedly. It requires calorie counting and strict adherence in order to adjust your body’s levels and push it into ketosis. Only then will you begin seeing changes.
